132 East Main Street
In March 1855, David McWilliams started a general store, the first permanent store in Dwight. On April 14, 1855, at the age of 22, McWilliams established a banking business in conjunction with his general mercantile business for the convenience of his customers. Thus, the Bank of Dwight opened in a white two-story frame building. It became the fifth oldest bank in Illinois and was owned by the McWilliams family until 1963.
The present building, of Greek Classic design, was built in 1910 and expanded into the adjacent building in 1974. The domed ceiling and murals by Viennese artist Oskar Gross are highlights of the building. In 2019 the Bank of Pontiac purchased the Bank of Dwight, and the banking center moved to a new building on East Chippewa Street. The Dwight Economic Alliance now occupies the Main Street bank building.
